Getting There

SELF-DRIVE

If you're planning to drive to Melbourne, allow at least nine hours from Adelaide, 10 hours from Sydney, 20 hours from Brisbane and up to two days from Perth. If you've got extra time, the coast roads with their scenic beauty and quaint towns are a great option.

CAR & MOTORCYCLE HIRE

Local and international car rental firms operate in Melbourne and larger regional centres. They offer a variety of vehicle types and deals. Major rental companies in Melbourne include Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz and Thrifty.

The minimum age to rent a car in Victoria is generally 25 years old. Some outlets will hire cars to those under 25, although surcharges and restrictions may apply.

BUS

SkyBus City Express service operates 24 hours, seven days a week, including all public holidays leaving at least every ten minutes during the day. SkyBus St Kilda Express service operates 365 days a year from 6.30am to 7pm. Buses depart approximately every 30 minutes on weekdays, and every hour on weekends and public holidays. SkyBus Frankston and Peninsula service operates every day except Christmas from 4.20am to 7.25pm.

AIR TRAVEL

Melbourne Airport

On site services include shops and tax free shopping for international travellers, lockers, ATMs, currency exchange, restaurants, bars, information and car rental desks and, for departing travellers, a refund booth to reclaim Goods and Services Tax (GST) on some goods. There is also parking, for a fee. Three hotels are within a five minute walk of airport terminals. Choose from the Parkroyal, Holiday Inn and Ibis budget.

International airlines

Melbourne Airport is serviced by around 30 international airlines, and is just a 25 minute drive from the city. Fly direct to Melbourne from London in 21.5 hours, or from North America with fly time between 15 (ex Los Angeles) and 20 hours (ex New York/Toronto). From New Zealand, fly direct (ex Auckland) in approximately 3.5 hours.

Domestic airlines

Qantas, Virgin Australia, Jetstar and Tiger are the major domestic carriers which run services from Australia’s major cities. Jetstar also flies from Avalon Airport near Geelong. Regional airlines Qantas Link and REX (Regional Express) fly to Melbourne and larger regional centres including Mildura, Portland, Traralgon and Mount Hotham.

VISITOR SHUTTLES

How to purchase tickets: they are available from the Melbourne Visitor Centre, Fitzroy Gardens Visitor Centre, Melbourne Airport Arrivals Hall (terminal two) or from ticket machines located at each stop. Please note: ticket machines only accept credit cards or coins.
